At West Third and Thompson Streets, a man was shot twice around 11PM on Friday night - prime barhopping time. Reports say a dispute began at the restaurant where the victim worked, which seemed to be Negril from the TV reports we saw. Police say the gunman disappeared into crowded Washington Square Park, and the victim "sought refuge" at bar, The Dove. Apparently the gunman was a frequent customer. The victim is recovering at St. Vincent's.
An off-duty police officer and another patron of Cordato's at Rector and Greenwich got into an argument and the off-duty cop pulled out his gun. The other man pushed it away and the gun ended up going off and shooting him in the leg. Officer Bernard Marti was arrested and suspended without pay for 30 days.
And two staffers at The Source magazine were charged with attempted murder, after a triple shooting on Friday night on West 23rd Street. It turns out that the general manager and a salesman at The Source were arguing with a rapper, his cousin, and a busboy over "whether or not a rap CD would be played." Yeah, it's kind of crazy. Leroy "Bum" Peeples and Alvin Childs apparently shot rapper Orlando Orenga in the head, his cousin in the arm and leg and the busboy in the torso; they were apprehended carrying a Glock and 9mm gun.
The Yankees can’t wait to escape from California. They may have the dumbest name in baseball, but the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim can play baseball and on Saturday night they thumped the Yankees for the third straight game, this time winning 8-6.
The Yankees actually had a 3-1 lead in this game courtesy of an RBI single from Alex Rodriguez and back-to-back homeruns by Derek Jeter and Robinson Cano, but with Kevin Brown on the mound a two-run lead is never safe. Brown was shellacked for seven runs in just over three innings. Between Brown’s constantly injured back and his surly disposition, the Yankees and their fans cannot wait to be rid of him, but with their pitching problems, they will have keep using him every fifth day for the foreseeable future. One thing is for sure, with seven shopping days left until the trading deadline, Brian Cashman will be busy.
The Yankees have one more game in California, today at 4:05pm, with Mike Mussina looking to pitch the Yankees to a winning road trip. Then it’s back to the Stadium for six games against the Twins and the dreaded Angels starting Tuesday.
When the British authorities released photographs of the suspected bombers from Thursday's incident, one could make out that one of the men was wearing a New York t-shirt. Oh boy. Police later found the shirt "discarded in a street in Brixton." The AP report pointed out that NY was a former terror target, but Gothamist suspects that the t-shirt was simply coincidental, as New York may be the world's second home (even if not in 2012), simply a way for people to blend in. But if another suspect were wearing a Madrid t-shirt, along with a Bali one, then we'd rethink it.
And, it turns out that the man the Metropolitan Police shot on a train carriage in the London subway did not have links to the suspected bombers. The Brazilian government wants an explanation, and the police are sticking to their story, so far, that the man (who is not South Asian, but South American) jumped the turnstile and did not stop for the police.
Spotting the Dodgers a 6-0 lead proved costly for the Mets, as they lost 6-5 to Los Angeles at Shea Stadium Friday night. The loss snapped the Mets four-game winning streak, their longest since early May. Fortunately for them, they have Pedro Martinez starting Saturday's game, and he has returned to his dominant self after a brief slump in late June.
Martinez is not the only Met pitcher throwing well. Prior to taking the loss on Friday, Victor Zambrano had been suprisingly effective, with an ERA in the mid-3s. Tom Glavine has pitched his best since the first half of 2004, and even Kaz Ishii threw six shutout innings on Thursday. With Steve Trachsel expected back in early August, the Mets should have few complaints about their pitching staff.
Their lineup is still a mystery. Doug Mientkiewicz's home runs in consecutive games are a nice contribution from first base, a position at which the Mets have ranked near the bottom of the major leagues in offensive production. Carlos Beltran, who needs to have an improved second half for the Mets to compete in a mediocre NL East, added a three-run shot on Friday. The Mets should welcome the overperformance of Mientkiewicz and a performance from Beltran worthy of his hefty contract. Gothamist isn't sure either will continue, but the Mets sure hope at least one does.
When Gothamist friend and barbecue champion Adam Perry Lang of Daisy May's BBQ invited us to a party, how could we say no? It had been way too long since we had last enjoyed Adam's sweet and sticky Kansas City ribs and his tender smoky brisket, not to mention that we had to hear about his latest escapades.
Aside from becoming the Grand Champion at the BarbQlossal contest at the World Pork Expo in Des Moines last month, Adam has been busy taping his Iron Chef battle against fellow griller Bobby Flay (the episode debuts this Sunday -- set your Tivos) - in what we hear is an "epic" battle. In between, he managed to throw a fabulous soiree drawing a crowd including author and food critic Jeffrey Steingarten (we didn't stalk him this time), restaurant magnate Drew Nieporent, and Ray Lampe (a.k.a. Dr. BBQ).
The event was sponsored by Stoli Persik, and the peachy cocktails were a perfect match for Adam's signature dishes and some inventive new ones he tried out that night, including a grilled shrimp with peaches and mint and a kobe beef burger. Ah, summer.

It was only a matter of time before the power of Cafe Press would be harnessed to express what many people are thinking! The Village Voice reported that shortly after the NYPD announced they would be checking subway - and bus - riders' bags randomly, Tony Lu created these t-shirts online. Lu, an immigrants rights activist, is concerned that immigrants and other poor New Yorkers are most vulnerable to the NYPD's tactics, even though the police claim they will not be racially profiling. (The Voice adds, "Lu will not get a cut. The shirts' manufacture, sale, and shipment, will be handled by the online retailer. Lu encourages budget-conscious New Yorkers to make their own and wear them everywhere.")
There's just one thing missing from the shirt: Words on the back reading "I'm going to the next station entrance, sucker."
Welcome to the weekend everyone. It's going to be NOT HUMID. So go outside and turn your a/c's off and conserve some energy before there's another blackout.
MOVIE: Quickflicks is this city's "hippest filmmaking co-op" and tonight their having a screening at Gothamists favorite ever venue...The Frying Pan! It's a series of boats and decks people, need we say more? Tonight will feature eight filmmakers who have created works within 30 days. That's very fast. [via FreeNYC]
Date: Friday / 7pm / Frying Pan, Pier 63 (23rd and the Hudson River) / Free
THEATER: The Girlhood of Shakespeare's Heroines consists of five monologues uniting to create one interconnected piece, much as Shakespeare’s five acts create one play. In these five monologues five young women, characters from Shakespeare’s plays, discuss as never before their views on love, life, sex and theatre. We still have our Riverside Shakespeare from college, so we're definitely going to try to catch this.
All weekend / 8pm / Looking Glass Theatre [422 W 57th St] / $15 (save $5 with this coupon)
MUSIC: We're pretty certain it's all covered here at the end of this post. Gothamist is seriously considering heading to Bowery tonight for Teenage Fanclub. We haven't listened to them for a long time, but they have lots of mp3's on their site (accompanied by cute illustrated cassette tapes) and it still sounds good to us.
OVER THE TOP: This weekend Coney Island brings us yet another...interesting...contest. The 23rd Annual White Castle Kingsboro Golden Arm Championships where more than 100 arm-wrestling contenders try out for a spot in the Empire State Championship Finals. Arm wrestling sponsored by White Castle. Awesome. [via Papermag]
Astroland on the boardwalk [between W.10th and W.12th St], Coney Island / 12:30pm / Free.
Gothamist believes in adopting a local. Even if it's not in our neighborhood. That's why, after then upteenth Dodgeball message we joined a friend at his local, Boat. Owned by the same people behind Great Lakes, the bar thankfully doesn't have much of a maritime theme past the stenciled oars few and far between behind the bar. With thrift store furniture and ancient videogames, it could feel like a dingy rec room but, refreshingly, nothing's sticky. The adorable bartender read the extensive beer list because, unlike our friend, we hadn't memorized it and it was so dark that we wanted to ask if the Christmas lights could be moved closer. Driking our $4 pint we had to appreciate the eclectic jukebox, while not the encyclopedia at Hifi, it is unique and made almost entirely of homemade mix cds - not too much that's too trendy or too exhausted, good music to be reminded of during pauses in conversation. Boat is good for hanging out when you and your broke friends can't afford any of the restaurants on Smith Street, though would prefer drinking your dinner anyway. Or when you can't stomach the thought of getting back on the G train sober.

Roman Polanski Wins Libel Case Against Vanity Fair
Legendary Director Roman Polanski (Chinatown, The Pianist), who testified against a Vanity Fair article - via video, of course, to avoid extradition in the US where that sex with a minor issue is still hanging over his head, just won his libel case in a British court. The VF's article claimed Polanski seduced a woman at a NYC restaurant en route to the funeral of his wife Sharon Tate and their unborn child, who were viciously murdered by the Charles Manson clan in 1969. So, if Gothamist gets this right, you flee a country because you're too spineless to face justice, only to seek it once a magazine dares to run some gossip - good to know that Polanski’s inability to self-examine himself is almost laughable.
However, under questioning from Vanity Fair's lawyers, Polanski did admit he repeatedly cheated during his marriage and was back on the casual sex circuit only 4 weeks after Tate's death, which Conde Nast questioned as a "callous indifference to her memory." Polanski maintained it was "quite the contrary, [as it] would be callous indifference if I did so using Sharon's name …" and that he seduced Swiss finishing school girls just the Christmas after to prove his "continued existence" after his wife's death. And Mia Farrow, star of Rosemary's Baby, testified that Polanski was grieving when she met him at Elaine's, shortly after Tate's murder. Give this man an Oscar! Oh, wait, they did.
Now Vanity Fair, which called Polanski a "fugitive from morality," is set to pay him $87,000. According to the AP, editor Graydon Carter found that verdict "amazing," and that "as a father of four children, one of them a 12-year-old daughter, I find it... outrageous that this story is considered defamatory given the fact that he cannot be here because he slept with a 13-year-old girl a quarter of a century ago." We're just wondering if Carter is going to make Polanski come to the U.S. to claim his check.
Remember the story about the woman who got branded by a hot manhole cover last summer? Well, Liz Wallenberg is back in the news as she is going ahead with suing Con Ed. Wallenberg had fallen off her skateboard at 2nd Avenue and 13th Street last August, and then realized her skin was sizzling as her back was branded with the manhole's design and lettering. The Post reports she claims "the power company's 'negligence, carelessness [and] recklessness' is to blame for the defective cover, which seared into her skin and scarred her for life." Nice pun, Post. Since it's just under a year since the incident, Gothamist wonders if tattoo has faded considerably - we thought she'd have a suit filed two minutes after seeing what it looked like!
Tricky forecast for today. Oh, have no fear, we'll get plenty warm. The tricky part is whether or not we will have a thunderstorm this afternoon. It all depends on what happens with the humidity. Most of the humidity, the high dew points, are very close to the ground. The air above is fairly dry. As we heat up today the moist surface air and the dry air above should mix, reducing the chance of a thunderstorm. If they don't mix the chance of an impressive thunderstorm as a cold front approaches goes way up. The more humid it is when you get out of work this afternoon the more likely it is that we may see a severe thunderstorm.
The weekend is looking great. Sunny, dry, temperatures in the mid-80s. Get out and enjoy before the heat returns next week. All that hot weather out west is starting to move eastward.
The nomination of Judge John Roberts to the Supreme Court has struck a sour note with New Yorkers who are not David Brooks, especially New York politicians in search of female voters. Mayor Bloomberg received an endorsement from Naral Pro-Choice in New York. Bloomberg, who has consistently been pro-choice, in spite of his inconsistent political party sides, even made remarks saying that he'd only support Roberts if Roberts didn't overturn Roe v. Wade. Bloomberg's challengers have come out against Roberts as well, and they take the Mayor to task for not being aggressive enough in pro-choice efforts; City Council Speaker Gifford Miller, for instance, points out that Bloomberg vetoed a bill giving emergency contraception to rape victims. But, as others point out, it's not surprising Hizzoner is pro-choice, given his advice to female employees at Bloomberg.
